The Retina Fellowship at Retina Specialists of Alabama (RSA) is a rigorous, AUPO FCC-compliant, two-year surgical retina fellowship offered in partnership with the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Ophthalmology. Our program participates in the San Francisco Match and is designed to train future leaders in the field of vitreoretinal surgery and disease management.
Fellows in our program train directly under the mentorship of five experienced retina specialists:
Clinical and Surgical Training
Our program offers high surgical volume that provides unparalleled hands-on experience in the management of complex retinal pathology. Fellows are involved in all aspects of patient care, including:
- High-volume retina clinics at Retina Specialists of Alabama
- Clinical and surgical care at the Birmingham VA Medical Center
- Patient care at the Callahan Eye Hospital Lions Clinic
Fellows gain extensive exposure to the full spectrum of medical and surgical retina, including retinal detachment repair, macular surgery, diabetic retinopathy, uveitis, and ocular trauma.
Academic & Research Opportunities
Our fellowship includes weekly medical and surgical retina conferences, fostering a strong academic environment for case discussion, journal club, and surgical planning.
Fellows are encouraged and supported in their academic pursuits, including presenting research at national and international ophthalmology conferences. Travel and registration support is provided as part of our commitment to scholarly development.
All RSA physicians hold faculty appointments in the UAB Department of Ophthalmology, and fellows are actively involved in teaching and academic collaboration.
