Dr. Mathew R. Sapp is a board-certified ophthalmologist and Managing Partner at Retina Specialists of Alabama (RSA), a leading private retina practice affiliated with the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He is known for his dedication to surgical excellence, academic involvement, and compassionate patient care.
A native of Alabama, Dr. Sapp earned his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from Birmingham-Southern College, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1997. He received his medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine in 2002. He then completed his ophthalmology residency at UAB’s Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital, followed by a two-year vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at Retina Specialists of Alabama, training under renowned mentors including Drs. Robert Morris, C. Douglas Witherspoon, and James A. Kimble.
Since joining RSA in 2008, Dr. Sapp has been an integral part of the practice’s growth and continued reputation for excellence. His leadership, surgical expertise, and commitment to education have helped maintain RSA’s position at the forefront of vitreoretinal care in the Southeast.
Dr. Sapp also holds a faculty appointment with the UAB Department of Ophthalmology, where he contributes to resident and fellow education.
