Matthew R. West is a board-certified ophthalmologist and vitreoretinal surgeon at Retina Specialists of Alabama (RSA). He also serves as a Volunteer Clinical Instructor at the UAB Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital, where he helps train the next generation of ophthalmologists through RSA’s close academic affiliation with the UAB Department of Ophthalmology.
Dr. West earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta, followed by an ophthalmology residency at Georgetown University. He then pursued a dedicated fellowship in uveitis and ocular inflammation at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, one of the nation’s leading eye care centers. Following that, he completed a vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at Retina Specialists of Alabama, where he trained under nationally recognized leaders in the field.
With specialized training in both uveitis and retina surgery, Dr. West brings a unique depth of expertise to managing complex inflammatory and retinal diseases. His clinical approach is centered on personalized, evidence-based care, and he remains actively involved in teaching and mentorship through his role at UAB.
Dr. West is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retina Specialists. Outside of his professional life, he enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife and daughters.
