Dr. Mathew Sapp graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry from Birmingham Southern College in 1997. He received his medical degree from University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), School of Medicine, graduating in 2002. Dr. Sapp performed his residency training in ophthalmology at UAB School of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology, Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital and upon completion accepted an additional two-year vitreoretinal fellowship position at Retina Specialists of Alabama, LLC (RSA) under the preceptorship of Dr. Robert Morris, Dr. C. Douglas Witherspoon and Dr. James A. Kimble.
In July 2008, Dr. Sapp joined the practice of RSA as fulltime associate in the practice. Distinguishing himself by his character and competence he has been appointed to the position of managing partner in the practice and is the current Director of the UAB Retina Specialist of Alabama Vitreoretinal Surgical Fellowship Program. Dr. Sapp sees patients in the Birmingham, UAB Highlands location, as well as in Jasper and Oxford/Anniston facilities. The scope of Dr. Sapp’s interest and practice include diagnosis, treatment both medically and surgically of diabetic eye disease, macular diseases, retinal detachment and ocular trauma.
Dr. Sapp’s abilities and knowledge have rapidly gained him the respect of his fellow ophthalmologists who refer patients to RSA and his services have become highly sought out in central Alabama.
He and his wife live in Birmingham area with their three lively, young children.
